Statement on Indian Republic Day

Posted on January 26, 2015

OTTAWA – John McCallum, Liberal Critic for Citizenship & Immigration, Multiculturalism and Seniors, today made the following statement on the occasion of India’s Republic Day:

“Today marks the 66th anniversary of India’s formal adoption of its constitution. India’s adoption of its own constitution represented an important step in achieving its independence. Republic Day is one of three national holidays in India and will be marked by more than one million Indo-Canadians across our country.

India and Canada share a strong belief in the importance of democracy, diversity and the rule of law. Our strong relationship with India is owed in no small part to the many Indo-Canadians who have made significant contributions to Canada’s rich cultural fabric and economic prosperity.

Republic Day celebrations will continue for the next three days until the evening of the 29th.  On behalf of Liberal Party of Canada Leader, Justin Trudeau, and our Parliamentary Caucus, I want to wish the Indo-Canadian community a very happy and joyful Republic Day celebration.”
